
Born in 1906 in West Bromish Madeleine Carroll was educated at Birmingham University and taught French before making her English stage debut in 1927. She became one of the most popular stage actresses in Britain during the next fives and moved on to become a star of Hollywood movies, best known for performances in "Thirty Nine Steps" and the "Prisoner of Zenda".
