This bridge was erected in 1879 to carry Canal Street in Wolverhampton across the canal near railway station. The road is now known as Broad Street. Designed by the Borough Engineer of Wolverhampton the bridge was built by Tyldesleys of Willenhall using local wrought iron in the main structure and cast iron for the outer arches.
When you walk down the ramp to the towpath, look for the grooves in the bridge directly above the path where the tow ropes have worn away the metal as the horses pulled the boats along.
The raised bricks in the towpath are called scorchers and allow the horses to get a good foothold.
