Chainmaking
Chainmaking was recognised as one of the many sweated industries existing in Great Britain in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. John Burnett's report of 1888 paints a picture of exploitation and hopelessness. Both his report and the articles of Robert Sherard concluded that the root of all evil in the industry lay in the domestic chainshops employing mostly women and children.
Other Sweated Industries
Sweated labour was found to exist in both domestic and factory settings. With growing public awareness came a number of attempts to identify the causes. Some of the conclusions reached would be found quite shocking today.
