The horrors of nineteenth century working practices, which the trade unions set out to reform, are well known: long working hours and poor working conditions for men, women and children; the lack of safety regulations, and the complete absence of any effective system for protecting the individual when sick, injured, unemployed or retired. One after another such battles were fought. This section looks at some of the issues.
