The Rights of Women

At the start of Queen Victoria's reign women had no separate existence in law; in effect they belonged to their father or husband. Independence came only with wealth. It was as late as 1928 before all women over the age of 21 were allowed to vote.

Liberated

Those lucky enough to be in work during the 1920s and 1930s were able to escape the drudgery of earlier decades, and take advantage of the leisure opportunities opening up to them. At the same time a battle was being fought to give women the right to seek advice on birth control.
